Prorating consumption data makes water loss analysis more accurate. After prorating you can more accurately calculate the volume of water consumed in any time period.

How do we prorate?

In our example below, a customer meter is read first in November and again in January. To get a better understanding of the volume of use in any given month, we allocate the proportion of the total volume between readings to the relevant calendar months. This is easy enough to do for a single meter read, but it's harder to do it for all of your meter reads in a year. That's where we can help.
We'll take every meter reading in your billing database and prorate it to calendar months. We can even summarize the total volumes by service type so you can meet regulatory reporting requirements.

Why prorate?

Water losses are caclulated by comparing production and customer consumption volumes. The problem is that customer meters and production meters are often read at different times. Our analysis calculates a best-estimate for the volume of consumption in each month so you can better calculate water loss for each month and for the year.

The graphs below show the total monthly volume of consumption with and without prorating the underlying data. The prorated dataset approximates monthly use much more accurately than the raw data.

What data do you need?

We'll need meter reading data organized in a common, but specific format to prorate it efficiently. If you can't provide data in this format please reach out so we can discuss other options.

You can send us meter reading data with one record or row for each meter reading. Each row should include the meter ID, the previous read date, the current read date, and the consumption volume. If you'd like a summary by service type or customer class, we'll need that column too!
